Recreation Aid (Kennels)

Incumbent performs a variety of duties in support of the Kennels that may include care of animals, maintenance of facility, and clerical work.


Provides care according to set schedules for dogs, cats, and other small animals. Handles docile but agile animals without injury to the animals and him/herself. Performs personal care for animals according to instructions. Observes animals for obvious changes in appearance or activity. Reports any obvious changes to supervisor or higher graded staff member. Prepares rations, feeds, and waters according to instructions. Ensures plenty of clean water is provided to pets. Cleanup and dispose of animal waste. Cleans and disinfects pens, kennels, rest rooms, cages, food and water bowls, exercise yards, and overall facility. Feed and administer medication to pets in accordance with owners' specific instructions. Exercise and play with dogs. Performs related support work, e.g., checking animals for licenses validity. Perform cashier duties on Point of Sales system and collects fees for service. Performs other related, incidental duties and clerical duties as assigned.


Requirements

6 months of general experience and 6 months of specialized experience OR One (1) year of education above high school. Knowledge of the MWR department in order to answer customer questions and/or refer customers to the appropriate activity. Knowledge of the normal appearance and activities of animals to recognize obvious changes such as refusal to feed. Knowledge of normal feed and liquid needs and provides standard amounts. Skilled in keyboarding to include operation of point of sale systems as well as desktop computers. Ability to work with animals. Ability to perform basic computer operations. Ability to read and comprehend in order to adhere to published rules, regulations, standard operating procedures, checklists, and other guides. Ability to perform basic custodial tasks (e.g., sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, wiping, dusting, etc.). Ability to perform basic arithmetic calculations (e.g., addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division). Ability to identify customer needs, deliver expected service and/or resolve routine customer issues. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to work independently.
